Every car, regardless of whether it's new or old, will eventually need some attention, such as oil changes, tire rotations, transmission flushes, new battery, new tires, etc. Ignoring these maintenance items will definitely cause problems down the road. However, if drivers understand what is needed to keep their car’s engine performing strong, major engine repair can be avoided. A few dollars spent now will save many dollars later!

What are signs of engine problems, you wonder? Here are several indicators and causes of engine problems:

  • Engine vibrates and shakes – the spark plugs may be bad or hoses are worn out.
  • Smoke coming from the engine – there could be serious internal damage to the engine.
  • The engine keeps overheating – the level of coolant and/or oil is too low, and the water pump has gone bad.
  • Noisy engine – the catalytic converter has gone bad, the muffler has holes in it, or the engine gaskets and seals are worn out.
  • Leaking fluids – there are puddles of oil, coolant, or transmission fluid under your parked car. Call for a tow to your auto shop as driving will cause further damage to the engine.
  • The “Check Engine” light illuminates – head to your auto shop for a diagnostic test to pinpoint the cause of this warning light – it could be a minor issue such as a bad sensor, or more serious, such as internal engine damage.
  • Lost power – There are problems with the engine or transmission.
  • Decrease in fuel economy – There could be a problem with the fuel system, the engine stroke, or the transmission.
  • Engine idles rough and stalls – the spark plugs could be bad or dirty oil has clogged the lines.

Know your vehicle! If you understand how it normally operates and runs, you can head to your auto shop as soon as you notice signs of engine problems. Your mechanic can inspect the engine and run a diagnostic test to pinpoint problems early and make the appropriate repair.
