For individuals considering the purchase of a hybrid vehicle or who already own one, it may be useful to know what happens when a hybrid battery goes bad and what hybrid repair options are available. Hybrid batteries have an average lifespan of 10 years. With proper care and maintenance, they can last up to 20 years.

Signs of a bad hybrid battery include the following:

  • Trouble starting the engine, or will not start at all;
  • Poor fuel economy, as the engine combustion will kick in more often without the aid of battery current;
  • Appearance of warning lights on information display;
  • Computer and code errors become more frequent;
  • Loss of, or sluggish, acceleration;
  • The vehicle will not cover as far of a distance;
  • The cooling fan will speed up and/or make more noise (bad batteries generate more heat);
  • Vehicle transmission may feel like it is slipping;
  • Battery charging issues (will not fully charge, battery drains faster than normal when in use);
  • The instrument display cluster will give an estimated distance that a bad battery may not allow the vehicle to cover; and/or,
  • Strange noises may occur, such as clicking, popping, or an abnormal electrical hum in the vehicle.

The aforementioned are the most common signs of what happens when a hybrid battery goes bad. It would be wise to seek hybrid repairs with a hybrid repair shop or hybrid battery repair specialist should any of these issues present themselves.

Available repair options include:

  • Replacement of bad battery cells (a hybrid battery has anywhere from 20-40 cells);
  • Replacing all battery cells;
  • Battery pack rebalancing;
  • Battery reconditioning; or,
  • Having a brand new battery installed. Depending on the make/model of the vehicle, a new battery can cost anywhere from $1500 to $8000.

The latter option is the best of hybrid repairs for eliminating all issues.
